Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (syn. X. citri subsp. citri) affects most industrial citrus cultivars and causes citrus bacterial canker resulting in considerable crop losses worldwide [1].PMID:22664133 The bacteria are presumably regarded as as epiphytes on the plant surface just before infection [2]. They infect leaves, stems, thorns and fruits and enter the citrus plant primarily by means of wounds and stomata [3]. Biofilms are formed when microorganisms attach to a surface and form a self-produced matrix of exopolysaccharides (EPS) that they embed themselves inside [4]. Rigano et al. (2007) showed that biofilm formation is essential for epiphytic fitness and canker improvement in X. axonopodis pv. citri [5]. Our earlier study indicated that Bacillus subtilis TKS1-1 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens WG6-14 can interfere with phyllosphere biofilm formation by X. axonopodis pv. citri, which may contribute to the attenuation of citrus bacterial canker symptom improvement [6].
